Inner Development Goals

Last week, we kicked off our very first online class for the CORE Experience program participants. This year, we have adopted a flipped-classroom model where the content learning is done prior to the cohort gathering. This approach allows for more time with the cohort exploring the material and engaging with each other. It’s an experiment, a core practice of Adaptive Leadership, and we are excited to learn from the process.

During this session, we also kicked off the introduction of the Inner Development Goals (IDGs) model as an enhancement to our adaptive leadership programming. Our first virtual session introduced the IDGs and focused on an overview of the 5 dimensions and 23 skills. Students were able to learn about the skills and determine which they currently practice, and which offer areas of growth.

We first introduced the Inner Development Goals framework to you in February in the article about our new 10-month CORE Experience class. This month, CORE Experience 2026 will be playing with the IDGs and exploring how they might begin practicing some of the new skills in their day-to-day work.

Co-created by more than 1,000 experts, scientists and practitioners, we believe embracing and participating with the IDG community is a great way to join an international collective of engaged individuals and organizations that believe that we can make a difference, both locally and globally.

As adult learners, it is critical that we continue to look for new ways to think about the work that we do, and how we want to show up. The IDGs give us a comprehensive framework to review what we do well and which skills we need to hone in order to be effective changemakers. In addition, we join a worldwide collective who are exploring these skills and tracking how they help each organization, public, private and nonprofit, succeed in making change.
